A natural and relaxed tipi wedding in the Suffolk Countryside

When Jane and Whisky first asked me to be their wedding photographer I actually said no! They told me that they were looking for a natural wedding photographer and for a friendly face who on the day wouldn’t be too imposing – they wanted someone they knew would blend into the crowd and get along well with their friends and family. I knew instantly that it would be a brilliant day bursting with fun and laughter, with totally delicious food and drink and music to get the toes of all generations dancing, and with personal touches and lots of creative details, since both Jane and Whisky have impeccable taste. My absolute dream wedding: just 2 people, getting married, staying true to themselves and for the wedding to reflect their personalities, and above all for it to feel relaxed and natural. This is exactly the kind of wedding I love, and natural wedding photography is my speciality. So why on earth did I say no?! Well, in short it was because Jane is one of my oldest friends and I couldn’t bear the idea of missing out!!

But then I thought about it, and I thought about how honoured I feel to capture the weddings of so many couples just like Jane and Whisky, and how lucky I feel that couples that share my passions ask me to be there on their wedding day. It never ceases to amaze me how my perfect couples always seem to find me and how well we get on when we meet and I always tell people that their wedding photographer should feel like a friend. I am extremely lucky to get lots of referrals when brides I’ve worked with recommend me to their friends - it’s such a compliment when I’m fortunate enough to photograph the weddings friends of previous brides, and sometimes even a whole friendship group! I thought about how much I enjoy getting to know each and every couple’s story, meeting their family and friends during bridal prep and capturing the full range of emotions that are on show on wedding day, not to mention recording all the details which are so often the product of many hours of creativity of so many loved ones involved in the day and I realised that I couldn’t NOT say yes to this wedding, so I called Jane straight back to tell her so!

And before we knew it we were excitedly planning the kind of coverage she would like for her natural and relaxed wedding in the stunning Suffolk countryside. When the day itself came I didn’t stop smiling all day, and not once did I feel like I missed out. Wild flower fields, tipis, haybales, a firepit and LOTS of dancing. In the 30 degree heat. By Jane. Who was 7 months pregnant and still looked ABSOLUTELY. AND TOTALLY. GORGEOUS! (And as someone who definitely waddled through the latter stages of pregnancy I can honestly say I’ve no idea how she did it!). Feast your eyes! xxx

Fulham Palace Wedding - Hannah and Ben

Hannah and Ben recently got married at beautiful beautiful Fulham Palace, and what a fun packed day it was! Hannah and her bridesmaids got ready in Kew before making the short trip over to the All Saints Church in Fulham and then on to Fulham Palace for the reception. It was a beautiful sunny day and a wonderfully put together wedding, full of friends and family, singing and laughter. I loved being a part of it - congratulations Hannah and Ben!

Walthamstow Pre Wedding Shoot - Jane and Whisky

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Jane and Whisky for their pre wedding shoot on a sunny Saturday morning in lovely Walthamstow. People don't believe me when I say this area of London is a hidden gem - it's full of gorgeous countryside, canal walks and at this time of year is especially pretty blossom everywhere you turn. Jane and Whisky are such a fun couple and are always laughing together, it was an absolute pleasure to hang out and I can't wait for the wedding in July!

A Chelsea Town Hall Wedding on Valentines Day - Jo and John

Jo and John got married on Valentines Day in a lovely ceremony in the Brydon Room of Chelsea Town Hall. I love Chelsea Town Hall as the rooms inside are light and bright - and when you come out onto the Kings Road you always get the odd tourist stopping to wish the newlyweds well!

As soon as I met Jo and John I was so excited to shoot their wedding as I knew we'd be a great match. Jo is a keen photographer herself and was really keen to find a photographer to capture her wedding in a natural and relaxed way, and that she and John felt at ease during the portraits. Nothing too staged but at the same time she wanted to allow some time in the day for her and John to take some beautiful portraits together. It was like music to my ears!

Even though it was mid February we managed to find a window of time when the rain held off just long enough to capture some natural and relaxed photos of Jo and John (not to mention Jo's very wonderful fur stole!) before jumping into a taxi and whisking them off to their reception at Tom's Kitchen. It was a day full of fun and laughter and a total privilege to photograph - congratulations guys!

North London Family Photography - A Spring family shoot in Finsbury Park

I recently spent a few hours with this lovely family over in my old stomping ground of Finsbury Park in North London. We had a LOT of fun in the playground, documenting where this young family spend a lot of their time.  They will soon be moving overseas so wanted to preserve this time with some natural family photos in their London neighbourhood. Time moves so quickly that it's great to be able to capture these precious moments, the everyday, as nothing stays the same for long! Little ones love to have the freedom to run around outside, rather than being "staged" or posed in a studio or indoors. For this reason I love getting outdoors where we can explore and maximise use of natural light. I never know what we're going to find but I always love what we do find!

Natural and Fun Family Portraits in London

It's SO lovely to see Spring is definitely well on it's way - goodbye huge winter coats and hello long walks in the countryside! Here are some recent family portraits I took in the very beautiful Wanstead Park. Taking family photos outdoors is fab because it is so much more relaxed than studio photography can often be...little ones can run around as they please and being in the great outdoors allows us to take advantage of beautiful natural light, rather than using flash. I love taking natural family portraits where everyone feels relaxed and happy rather than too posed!

London Wedding Photography Shoreditch - Tammy and Tom

Tammy and Tom got married in Shoreditch in London back in October, close to where they live. It was one of my favourite weddings of last year - one that was so full of warmth and personal touches that I couldn't stop smiling from start to finish!

The ceremony itself was in Shoreditch Town Hall and the reception was at the very wonderful Tab Centre just round the corner. The Tab Centre is a wonderfully light and bright space for a wedding reception - it's a beautiful hall complete with upper gallery - the perfect setting for you to include your own personal touches. Tammy and Tom put their own beautiful stamp on the place with lots of fresh flowers from the lovely ladies at the Flower Appreciation Society which fragranced the whole room with the most incredible smell.

When I arrived at the Boundary Hotel where the bridal party were getting ready, I instantly noticed how relaxed everyone was - Tammy and her 5 bridesmaids were having a fab time getting ready altogether - no stress at all, just laughter, music and a little glass of fizz before they walked the short walk to Shoreditch Town Hall. We stopped at Arnold Circus on the way - a hidden gem of a spot in Shoreditch that just happened to be en route and which we just happened to have time to utilise for a few portraits of the girls before the ceremony in the glorious October sunshine. Yes, really!

This wedding incorporated all the things I love about being a London wedding photographer - 2 happy and relaxed people getting married in their own way, with all their loved ones around them. The atmosphere all day was very relaxed and joyful and there was a real sense that everyone there was celebrating the day. The wine flowed freely, the speeches were met with rapturous applause and the dance floor was packed all night. Wedding perfection!

Goodbye 2014 - a year in review

Happy New Year!

Writing this blog post has put such a big smile on my face as I look back on all the inspiring people I met and the amazing experiences I was able to call "work" in 2014. One of my absolute favourite things about my job is getting to meet lots of new people, all with a unique story to tell. It's such a privilege to be the person responsible for capturing a special moment in time for someone, and this year I've loved being at all my couples' wedding days - each one so different to the one before and all so completely awesome! I've also been lucky enough to do lots of lovely family photo shoots, couple shoots, wedding anniversary shoots, new babies, photos for internet dating profiles and soooo much more! Being a photographer of people is the best job in the world!

I am yet to blog some of the weddings from the latter part of the year so keep checking back to see them in all their glory! A huge thank you to all the lovely lovely couples I was lucky enough to work with last year, we had a blast didn't we?! Here are some of my favourite shots from the year that was 2014 (in no particular order!):

Eltham Palace Wedding Photography - Penny and Roy

Well, after a brilliant summer bursting with weddings, I am finally back on my blog - sorry for the long pause! I have had the biggest smile on my face throughout all my weddings this summer - I sometimes can't believe how lucky I am to actually call this my job!

Wait until you see this amazing wedding at the absolutely stunning Eltham Palace - an English Heritage site dating back to the 1300s chosen by the lovely Penny and Roy. Eltham Palace is a beautiful yet well hidden palace tucked away in Greenwich...I couldn't stop smiling as I wandered around it's stunning gardens on arrival. Then when I went inside I my smile grew even more, as there are some simply wonderful architectural details, including the very beautiful round entrance hall where the ceremony took place. Look out also for my absolute favourite room - the sumptuous gold-tiled bathroom!

Congratulations Penny and Roy - your wedding was stunning - full of smiles, happiness, friends and family - and definitely the BEST first dance I've ever seen :-) xxx

The benefits of an Engagement Shoot

I'm often asked what an engagement shoot is and whether one is necessary - I think lots of people are nervous about the idea of "posing" for photos and don't feel like it will necessarily be something they will enjoy. Well let me tell you - engagement shoots are really fun! Read on to find out why they're a great idea and so worthwhile for both you and your photographer.

An engagement shoot is a brilliant way for you and your wedding photographer to get to know one another in a relaxed environment, with none of the time pressure of a wedding day. Taking the time to have some pictures taken as a couple before your wedding day means that you and your photographer can try out lots of different types of shot. This means that on your wedding day, your photographer can get the best portraits of you in as little time as possible so that you can get back to your friends and family and enjoy your day with minimal intervention.

For my couples an engagement shoot involves meeting up at a pre-agreed location and spending a couple of hours making you feel comfortable with all aspects of having your photo taken.

As I specialise in natural wedding photography, the location is usually outdoors - perhaps a favourite local park, beach or city location.

For many couples the first time they come into contact with a professional photographer is when they are looking for a wedding photographer.  Lots of people don't *think* they like having their photo taken, and can therefore feel nervous having a camera following them around all day on their wedding day.  If you have any concerns about having your photo taken, the engagement shoot is the perfect way to get some experience being photographed as a couple, and I can show you how much fun it can be, and you'll experience what it'll be like on the day. My priority during the engagement shoot is to make you feel as relaxed as possible by letting you know as much as I can about how I work, what's involved in having your photo taken and why it's nothing to fear! As a natural wedding photographer, it's important to me that you feel comfortable and relaxed with me, so that we can create some beautiful portraits which aren't forced in any way and which show your true personalities.

So, during the shoot we'll chat lots, and I'll snap away in between finding out all about you and how your wedding planning is going (or whatever else we're gassing about!). We'll try out lots of different ideas which will help me to know what works best for you as a couple - this gives you a lovely set of shots and the confidence that on your wedding day we know exactly the kind of portraits you will love. Here's a recent London engagement shoot with the lovely Jade and Ben:

Hedsor House Buckinghamshire Wedding Photography - Abbie and Rhoys

Photographing Abbie and Rhoys' Hedsor House wedding in Buckinghamshire was an absolute joy. I loved everything about their fun and relaxed wedding, which concentrated on their love for each other, their families and friends and most of all, their beautiful baby girl. The atmosphere in both the bride's getting ready suite and the groom's hotel was one of pure excitement, and each of them had such a fun time getting ready, laughing and joking with friends and staying very relaxed. This was lovely to see, and just as it should be! There was non-stop smiling and laughter, and Hedsor House was a stunning venue to celebrate with their loved ones. Here are a few of my favourites from the day - congratulations guys!

One Friendly Place Wedding Photography - Polly and Tim

Last month I was lucky enough to shoot a wonderful warehouse wedding at One Friendly Place in Deptford. I love warehouse weddings because they always have a strong focus on fun and personal touches, and Polly and Tim's wedding was full of both! The bride and groom were super chilled and the focus was firmly on celebrating their special day with their friends and family. The ceremony took place at the beautiful Hackney Town Hall, which is one of my favourite London registry offices, before old Routemaster buses whizzed the party over to One Friendly Place in Deptford, which was bursting with character and beautiful light. There the guests were treated to a delicious spread, topped off with a table of homemade cakes.  The day was full of laughter, happiness, friends and family and was an absolute pleasure to shoot!

Asylum Wedding Photographer Peckham - Laura and Will

I LOVED taking photos at Laura and Will's beautiful wedding at Asylum in Peckham. Also known as Caroline Gardens Chapel, Asylum is a beautiful 1800s grade II listed chapel and is in the centre of London's largest complex of almshouses. The "asylum" was a place of sanctuary - the oldest sense of the word, and it really is just that. A stunning place of calm, and a perfect venue for Laura and Will to invite their loved ones to watch them marry. I loved shooting at Asylum and if you'd like to find out more about the venue please click here

Intimate Registry Office Wedding

In November I was honoured to photograph the wedding of Chloe and Michael, a fun loving pair who wanted a small, intimate ceremony full of their closest family and best friends. The ceremony took place at Glasgow Registry Office, and was followed by a slap up meal at one of their favourite restaurants in town. I think Chloe's beautiful knitted vintage wedding dress could hold the record for my favourite registry office wedding dress ever...she sourced it from a lady in her 90s who had worn it for her own wedding and kept it in immaculate condition ever since...amazing and so so beautiful! And look out for a rather special wedding car too :-)

Buxted Park Hotel Wedding

Back in the summer I shot this beautiful wedding at Buxted Park Hotel. It was a wonderfully relaxed wedding, full of laughter and fun, just like Karen and Jamie themselves! Their priority was for everyone there to enjoy their day as much as they did, and I think it's fair to say everyone had a great time! I love it when a wedding reflects the personality of the bride and groom :-)
