East London Family Photographer - a relaxed at home session in Walthamstow
As you’ll have heard me say a thousand times before, when it comes to my photography approach I’m a huge fan of capturing families in places they feel natural and completely relaxed, and for babies that tends to be at home in their own surroundings, or in a local park or green space. I think when people hear of photographers coming to photograph their families they have a fear that it will be a really formal affair, but I’m the complete opposite of that as I can’t think of anything worse than being told how to stand or to smile on demand!
The MOST important thing to me is that I deliver a set of photos that is meaningful to the people in them, and for that reason I don’t have a studio set up or a range of awkward poses. When it comes to family life, I’m all about having a really fun hour - and letting everyone know that they can relax and enjoy me being there as I’m not going to make anyone do anything forced or that doesn’t feel awkward! People tend to come to me because they’d love a few photos to capture a moment in time, and so far haven’t managed to achieve that via selfies on their iPhone or in amongst the chaos of family life. In this family’s case, 9 months after the birth of their first child they realised that they didn’t have many photos of the 3 of them together - just hanging out at home and going for a stroll in their local area - things they were doing daily, but not finding the time to capture in a way that they felt happy with. So, one Sunday morning we hung out, and look at the beautiful results! Not a forced smile in sight :-)
